Synopsis
It’s Monday morning at Bush, Bever & Gold Solicitors, and cleaner Margaret is expecting nothing more eventful than a dirty floor and the usual secrets left lying around the office. Then Jack arrives with a gun, a badly thought-out plan and a demand for a client file that apparently doesn’t exist.
With Margaret’s wonderfully matter-of-fact perspective at its heart, an ordinary morning quickly descends into an increasingly ridiculous hostage situation involving Emma, an unflustered solicitor, and Darren, an exasperated courier with a lot of deliveries still to make. As Jack’s attempts to stay in control unravel, Margaret becomes rather more concerned with helping him than being frightened of him, and somehow everyone else gets dragged along with her.
Packed with sharp dialogue, physical comedy and escalating chaos, Hostage is a fast-paced comedy about bad decisions, misplaced confidence and the roles people assume when they think they know best. Everyone thinks they know who’s in control. Margaret might be the only one who actually does.
With its simple, single-office setting and four colourful, slightly madcap characters, Hostage offers plenty of scope for a director to be creative and have fun bringing the story to life.
