Synopsis
Inside a small, isolated Highland house inherited from a recently deceased relative, Knowing follows a long-married couple at a crossroads in their lives. As they clear the house and contemplate a fresh start, a series of unsettling incidents begin to suggest that he is somehow experiencing moments before they happen. As the events become more difficult to explain, old family stories of the Brahan Seer and the Highland gift of “second sight” start to feel less like folklore and more like an uncomfortable possibility.
As the burden of knowing grows, so too does the strain on their relationship. Faced with impossible questions about whether the future can be changed, whether some truths are kinder left unspoken, and whether fear of tomorrow can steal today, they must decide how to live with uncertainty. Blending warmth, humour and tenderness with Scottish folklore, this is a story about love, anticipation and the importance of remaining present, even when the future refuses to stay hidden.
Blending narration with naturalistic dialogue, Knowing invites its audience to share directly in the couple's journey, creating an intimate theatrical experience that balances folklore with deeply personal drama. The play offers two richly layered roles as husband and wife navigate love, fear and uncertainty together. The production can be staged simply or with great imagination through atmosphere, light and sound.
